Day 2a is in the Books and the Carnage has begun

Posted by pokerguru on July 9, 2009

We all knew this was going to be a marathon and that the biggest names in poker were going to have a target on their heads.  The survivors from Day 1a and Day 1b sat down at the tables yesterday and some of the names that had managed to build up formidable stacks were shown the rail by the end of the day.  All in all, 1,476 player started the day and only 630 of them still had chips when the final hand was dealt.

Some of the players that failed to make it through the day were Mike Matusow, Jennifer Tilley, Phil Laak, Gus Hansen, Eli Elezra, Todd Brunson, Gavin Smith, Amarillo Slim and Tony G.  While they will be watching from the side lines, Chris Ferguson, Andy Black, Greg Mueller, Mike Sexton and Thor Hansen have all managed to get through to the next session.

Day 2b should be interesting as the field for this session will be much larger.  A lot of players chose to play in the 2 late Day 1’s and we will see about 3,500 players start the day off before they combine fields to move forward.  It was also interesting that a lot of the professionals chose to start off on the later days as they knew they would also be packed with a lot of the amateurs that were getting satellite tickets into the Main Event.

We have talked many times about how difficult it is for the pros to navigate through large fields because of the fact that everyone wants to be the person that can say, “I took out (fill in name of pro here).”  Not only that, but by playing in one of the first two sessions, you would get a significant more amount of rest in compared to the later days when the fields get combined.  Make no mistake about it, these players will wear down with the grind that they are faced with.

We are a long way from the bubble as the top 648 players get paid.  You can expect that stage not be reached until Friday at the earliest.  When that time approached, play will come to grinding halt as everyone can smell the money and do not want to be the person that goes out on the bubble in the largest stage that poker sees every year.

Strap in and get ready for another long session of poker on Wednesday.  They will hopefully get this field down to under 1,000 players, leaving less than 2,000 overall to go into Day 3.  That is when the real fun begins as we will have all of the players in the same room for the first time since the tournament has started.

Rapid Fire Eliminations to Start Off Day 3 of the $40K NL Hold’em Event #2

Posted by Dan on May 31, 2009

As predicted, the fireworks started early as soon as Day 3 got underway. In less than an hour and a half, the field was down to 18 poker players and it did not stop there. Play tightened up somewhat, but his crew showed that they were not afraid to sling chips regardless of what they were holding.

The two major stories of the day have to be Tony G and Isaac Haxton. Somehow, Tony G had managed to hang on despite being short stacked just about the whole way. When his luck ran out and he was eliminated in 10th place, you had to feel for the guy. He had fought so hard to get to the final table and had his dreams squashed when he only had a little over $200,000 left in front of him. He pushed with A7h and was called by Torelli who was holding onto J10h. Both players hit the board, unfortunately for Tony G., he only hit his 7 and was sent to the rail.

As incredible as Tony G.’s staying power had been, the run of Haxton has been even more incredible. He started the day off with only a little over 500,000 in chips and has managed to climb his way up to the top spot of the leader board with 5,520,000 in chips.

While Raymer has not had the climb that we anticipated, he has continued to play solid poker. Unfortunately for him, his cards have not held up as well as they did in prior sessions, but somehow he is managing to dodge some major bullets and has remained right around the count that he started the day off at.

Shocking or not is a decision that you will have to make, but Bonomo crashed and burned all day. As well as his young, aggressive style worked over the last couple of days, it came back to bite him in Day 3. He continued to dump chips and finds himself at the bottom tier of the final table with a huge target on his stack.

The final table has shaped up very nicely with a great mix of the new and the old, the amateurs and the pros. Tomorrow should be a great session, but my money is still on Raymer to hoist the bracelet and scoop the cash.

Here is your final table and chips counts:
1) Isaac Haxton 5,520,000
2) Vitaly Lunkin 4,565,000
3) Lex Veldhuis 3,805,000
4) Greg Raymer 3,345,000
5) Alec Torelli 2,340,000
6) Justin Bonomo 1,685,000
7) Dani Stern 1,300,000
8) Noah Schwartz 660,000
9) Ted Forrest 560,000

In other tournaments….
The Omaha Hi-Low Split 8 or Better (Event #30 continues to move fast and furious. The top 10 is a definitive who’s who of the poker world. As of this posting, Eli Elezra continues to lead the way and looks absolutely unbeatable so far in this tournament. Other pros that are on top are Freddy Deeb, Layne Flack, Toto Leonidis, Chip Jett and the infamous Annie Duke. With only 90 players remaining, the remaining amateurs are going to have a tough time getting through to the final table.

Event #4 ($1,000 Stimulus NL Hold’em Event) stole the headlines early in the day as it was sold out (6,000 players) well before the tournament started. Players went flying out the door early and often and as of this posting, over 65% of the field was already gone. There were no chips counts posted as of yet, but we will have them for you as soon as they are available.

Sundays action should feature two final tables. The 40K event will be on its fourth and final day and the 3 day scheduled event #3 is also scheduled to finish up tomorrow. The question remains if they will be able to get the tournament down to that point in enough time to actually have the final table on Sunday. Day 2 of the 4 day Stimulus event will take place as well as Day 1 of the Champions Invitational. Monday is the beginning of the two a days with events 5 and 6 kicking off.

Greg Raymer Back atop a WSOP Leader board in a Big Way

Posted by pokerguru on May 30, 2009

Day 2 of the 40th Annual No Limit Hold’em event was filled with fireworks. Mike ‘the mouth’ Matesow finally started to get some cards, but was eventually eliminated. Chris Moneymaker showed his true form and once again went out before the money. It is amazing that he managed to squander away a second place chip position early on in day two. You read it right here that he was quite capable of doing exactly that and he did not disappoint.

Moneymaker broke one of the cardinal rules of poker in shoving a huge stack into the middle of the table with anything less than AA or KK. The hand that started him on tilt happened around 6:15pm. Tony G. started the action and Moneymaker immediately applied the pressure with QQ in the hole. Tony G. made the call and turned over AK. We all know what happened and with Moneymaker getting up to take a walk, you almost knew the end was near.

Chris should have stayed away from the tables a few minutes more because when he returned, he found himself looking at 1010. He made a move in middle position by throwing out a $43,000 bet that was quickly called by Forrest and his KK. Moneymaker walked away disgusted and before Forrest could stop him, a flop of KJ10 showed up to but a further damper on Moneymakers outs.

With only one card left I the deck to help him, he was sent to the rail when it did not hit the turn or river. Once again, Moneymaker misses the cash in a major tournament. Some will say he can take solace in finishing only 10 out of the money, but it is quite apparent that his 2003 win was nothing more than a fluke as he continues to get shut out at the WSOP.

The leaderboard now looks more like a who’s who of poker as a lot of the pretenders have finally been dropped. While there are still a few amateurs left, the bulk of the field consists of big name pros that are out for that monster payday. Even with the all-star cast, the biggest name on the board is Greg Raymer.

The 2004 WSOP Champion has proven that he was no fluke. He continues to grab headlines and made it all the way back to the top 25 in 2005 after his amazing win in 2004. He has been playing perfect poker in the second session and it shows as he was the first player to cross the 2,000,000 chip barrier. As of this posting, he holds a 1,000,000 chip lead over the next closest competitor.

The hand that put him over the top of this mark was one of the biggest of the tourney so far. Steve Z. was dealt the dreaded QQ and Raymer found AK in the hole. Raymer had called a raise by another player and then Steve Zotlow pushed the action to 100,000. Neil Chirss, the initial raiser, called and then it was Raymer’s turn to start the fireworks. He came over the top and pushed all in and Steve Z. pushed in his remaining 670,000. Chriss decided to get out of the way of this battle. Steve Z. was still good on the flop, but once again, AK pops as a K hit the turn and Zotlow was sent to the rail.

Raymer is always tough with a chip stack as there are few better at big stack poker than him. He has not fear and will put every small stack on a decision as the money gets closer and closer. With only 7 players left to the money, people will be holding onto their stacks with both hands. It would not be a surprise to see Raymer knocking on the door of 3,000,000 when the money is finally hit.

Get Ready for the World Series of Poker Europe

Posted by Craig on September 18, 2008

Friday September the 19th the second annual World Series of Poker Europe will get underway. The first event will be a No Limit Holdem, it’s a no re-buy event with each player starting with 6000 in chips. This year there are some changes, namely that the event will be played under one roof. The Casino at the Empire will host all four events at the years World Series of Poker Europe. As in Vegas where all the events are played at the Rio, the hope is to start a tradition in London. For all the North American fans out there ESPN will be airing eight hours of coverage from the tournaments in London. An Event has been added this years, making four bracelets up for grabs. The biggest question coming into this years events is will someone from the other side of the pond be able to walk away with one of the coveted bracelets. Last year Europeans won all three events, and the all the Americans will try be to become the first to win a bracelet in Europe.

Last years winners will be trying to defend there titles and make history by becoming the first player to win two World Series of Poker Europe bracelets. Thomas Bihl won last years HORSE event when he beat Jennifer Harman heads up. Last year the HORSE final table was littered with poker superstars like Jennifer Harman, Chris “Jesus” Ferguson and Kirk Morrison, no doubt the event directors will be looking for a similar showing. You can expect the HORSE tournament to be full of poker greats again this year because it will be the hardest bracelet to win in my opinion. Last years Pot Limit Omaha event was won by Dario Alioto, he also managed to make a final table in Pot Limit Omaha at the World Series in Las Vegas this year. Omaha last year brought out some big names who made big cashes Tony G finished third and Roland De Wolfe had a respectable eleventh place finish.

Last years Main Event in Europe looked as if a familiar face may win his first World Series bracelet ever in Europe. Gus Hansen was cruising, but he busted out tenth, the favorite was gone and it was anybody’s tournament. Up and coming superstar Annette Obrestad, showed her potential by taking home her first bracelet. Annette showed the world her aggressive bluffing style and may just have won the biggest tournament by a women in poker history. No doubt Obrestad will show up at this years World Series looking to build on the success she found last year. There were a lot of big names players in the top thirty last year and the event organizers will be looking for much of the same. Last year Patrik Antonius finished 29th, Erik Lindgren finished 26th, Annie Duke is 21st and Kenny Tran almost made the final table finishing in 16th.

Predictions

Event #1 – No Limit Hold’ em – The North American pros will be geared up and put a lot effort in to trying to win this event. Look for some good showing by top names players like Phil Hellmuth, Daniel Negreanu and Erik Lindgren. I think the North Americans will have to wait as Annette Obrestad wins her second World Series of Poker bracelet. Annette will be looking to prove that she is here to stay and be the first player to win two World Series of Poker will do just that.

Event #2 – HORSE – In my opinion the HORSE event is the most intriguing event at every World Series of Poker. The big names always show up and you can be assured that they will be at the final table. Scotty Nguyen won the HORSE world championship in Las Vegas at the World Series and I think you will see a lot of the same names fighting for the win in Europe. Look for another good result from Erik Lindgren, he is a great all around player and is confident after his player of the year at the World Series in Vegas. The first American to win a World Series of Poker Europe will be Chris “Jesus” Ferguson, and it will come in this event.

Event #3 – Pot Limit Omaha – Omaha has become a big game in the poker world, probably fits right behind Texas Hold’ em on the popularity scale. Europeans tend to be well rounded Omaha players and I think they will come away with another bracelet in this tournament. Last years winner Dario Alioto will have a good showing again, but I think he will come up short as Roland De Wolfe takes home the bracelet. Roland is an excellent Omaha player and I think he finally has a big win in this event.

Event #4 – Main Event No Limit Hold’ em – The main event will be everybody’s main goal, all the top pro’s want to win this title. Last year a lot of big names had big showings at this tournament, but I think you will learn a few new ones this year. Jennifer Harman will have a good showing in this tournament and Patrik Antonius will make the final table. With the bitter taste of last years bubble finish Gus Hansen will redeem himself and win the World Series of Poker Europe Main Event. Gus will be motivated and he will grind out the victory for his first bracelet.

Well we all know predictions are just that, predictions. I think Annette Obrestad, Chris Ferguson, Roland De Wolfe and Gus Hansen win the four bracelets. Of course there is the chance amateur players show up and win some tournaments, but there is no way for me to pick them. I truly enjoyed last years World Series of Poker Europe and I look for the same entertainment value this year. It all gets started on Friday September the 19th and without a doubt someone’s dreams will come true.
